I seen some baby firemouths in my LSF the other day and will be planning to get one in the next week or so, just a couple of questions....
is it possibal to tell there sex when they are still babies? If so what sex would be better to keep? like is there much colouration or behaviour difference between the sexes? are males or females better to keep?
Cheers

i have kept firemouths in my oscars tanks for years now and i have had no problems with them and my o's. imho firemouths are all bark and no bite. they act tough but when push comes to shove they tend to run and hide. now having said that not all cichlids are the same and you can get some real nasty ones in all species but generally speaking firemouths make a nice addition to an oscar tank.

if firemouths are what you are looking for mates in your oscar tank there might another species that will also interest you. the robertsoni cichlid (Amphilophus robertsoni) is another that might fit the bill for you. they are also an relatively non aggressive species and they tend to grow a little larger than the firemouth and would also make a fine addition to an oscar tank.

hope some of this helps.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

I've had what I think is a pair of Firemouths for about 8 months now and have seen no aggression from them at all. I was told you can sex them by their dorsal fins, the male has a longer sharper one and I think the male has more red. Mine can be really red one minute and very pale the next depending on their mood. They are some of my favorites and another species that I'd like to have a tank full of.
If you can't beat them...arrange to have them beaten!

Firemouths make great tankmates for oscars, but as usual all fish are different. You can tell the sex by how long the dorsal fin is, i think its longer on males. Males are more colourful and look particarly good when they there is aggression. They have a kind of web between the gills that comes out.
