Hey everyone,

I'm new to this site. I am a college student and I live in a house with a few other guys. We (I) recently invested in a 55gal tank that currently houses some trpoical fish. Tbh, being college guys, cute little tropical fish aren't really what we're looking for . We've talked a bit about maybe getting different types of fish later in the game. I personally think oscars are awesome, and, since it's my tank, I have the final decision on what goes in. So, in short, I'm hoping to get an oscar soon, either once I get another tank to put the tropical fish in, or once they die (hopefully the former). Onto my question.

As I stated, I have a 55gal tank. I have good filtration and everything. I realize I'll only be able to have one oscar, but I'm confused as to what other fist, and how many, would be good additions to the tank. Any help anyone can give would be great .

what do you call good filtration you need more for an oscar than you need for tropical id bet monet you have an internal and not a canister go on tell me im wrong dude!

Ok. You're wrong. I didn't get filtration planning on getting tropical fish. My friend's dad loves fish and has like five aquariums (Used to have an oscar, currently does not). He told me what I needed to buy. Unfortunately, other people (roommates' girlfriends) decided that tropical fish would be nicer, but, as I said, my roommates and I would like to have something else, and I've pretty much told them to tell their girlfriends to stfu.

what filter do you have?

Fluval 305 Canister Filter. If I had a bigger tank, I may have gone with a sump filter, which is what my friend has, but, sadly, I am on a fairly tight budget, and was spending to much as it was. Couldn't afford anything bigger.

a 405 would have been more suitable but if thats what you got thats what you got more water changes lol first of all why an oscar if you live in a studend shared house and get mates in for partys dont you want something a little more agresivly entertaining if you now what i meen

But seriously, the guys and I aren't big party guys. One of the guys goes out from time to time, but most of us are just as content to sit around the house. Oscars are cool, as I said, my friend had one, and I wanted one then. Unfortunately I only had a 10 gallon aquarium at the time. So, yeah, I've always thought oscars were cool, and now I want one, just don't know exactly what to put with it.

i got a couple of 6inch silver dollars and they get on fine by the way like the dolphin crack

or if you want something that is active like a dolphin but thrive with an oscar
try a pangasius aka ID shark. they never sleep but nice to watch but you will
be needing a bigger tank.

Hi Mrbach36, and welcome!! I have to tell you what was obviously missed by the others.. 1 Oscar in a 55 gallon tank is all you can have. There is NO room for tank mates! Now they are fine on their own, and you will be just as happy with one Oscar... They are wonderful fish with great personalities... But he will get big quick, and needs every bit of that 55 to himself!

I aggree with Nickisue.

Those tropical fish will die when your O is big enough to eat them...lol
SD's are cool tankmates but 55 Gl should be reserved for your O, esp. since you haven't got a huge filtercapacity.
