I hate to break it to you, but in a 55 gallon tank you can only have one Oscar! No tank mates... You could always upgrade your tank!

Sorry to be a party poo per Reggie but the others are right. your oscars going to grow to around 10-15" so No room for tank mates. it comes down to tank maintenance and how fast your water quality will become bad. too many fish and it will mean you are changing water every day!also they will have more chance of fighting cos they have No space. imagine being in a small public toilet with a mate, just no room. unless your george Micheal lol(

This is where i disagree with the others. You could get away with a couple of silver dollars or a six inch tank mate BUT you will have to do a lot more tank maintainence. You will not be able to miss a water change and you will be doing a lot of them. Most people dont think its worth the extra effort and if i had a 55g i wouldnt put a tankmate in with an oscar

I had to keep 2 mostly grown O's in a 55gal for about a week, it was a lot of trouble even for that short time and I felt awful for doing it. A 55 isn't very wide and they seemed to have trouble moving around. How big is your O now? Are you planning on putting a lot of time into your fish and tank?
If you can't beat them...arrange to have them beaten!

here we go a bit contraversial but its proven>>

ive got a 46 gallon tank running with 2 large canisters 48x18x15 there is 1 oscar 2 silversall fully grown i do a 25%water change every wait for it 4 days and id like to bet my water parameters are ass good if not better than any ones on here with a bigger tank .there is plenty of room as its 48 long i feed live food pellets and blood worm ,frozen.so there is a variety of waste left still the water is very good so a 55 gal COULD support a tank mate
could someone please post me the link that that proves a 55 gallon tank cant suport more than 1 large fish thanx

A 55g gallon can support 1 oscar and a tankmate but its more work as you know. Most people dont want to/ dont have the time to do more than 1 water change a week. 2 full grown oscars would mean a water change every 2 or 3 days and there could be aggression issues due to lack of physical room to move around. With overstocking you cant be late or miss even one water change or you could be trouble. It is far more work than most people will be able to keep up with

Another thing is that if you are maintaining your tank with 1 water change a week it is easier to put extra ones in if needed. If you are changing water every 2 days then it is much more difficult to find the time to do extra changes

You could get 3 Oscars in a 55 gal tank. Sure they would live. But they would swim into each other and NOT BE HAPPY.
