TOPIC: Odd oscar tank mates?!?!?!

Odd oscar tank mates?!?!?! 4 years, 5 months ago #6763

Just curious as to what the most odd fish you've all had in with your oscar (that lived and didnt get beat up on a daily basis). Mine was a 3-3.5" black moore, it was quite comical (sp?) to see him follow around my albino all the time.

auratus is one
Even though they are african cichlids they live in somewhat simular conditions to oscars.

Auratus are small aggresive cichlids that dont mix well but Ive kept one with 2 oscars for a long time...My auratus was a PITA to keep with other africans which is why he went into the oscar tank.
Enjoy each day like its your last

Hm, can't think of anything really odd. Think the oddest one was an adopted angelfish that had to sit in there temporarily. Nobody harmed it but it wasn't happy at all.
Else I've had quite some kinds of small fish 1-3" in there already with fingers crossed, and he didn't eat any yet, knocking on wood.

If I were a guy, I\'d have probably needed only 30% of the amount of words to say this

Another odd one i had was when i first started getting into aquariums, i had my oscar (only about 2-2.5" at time) and a BETTA in there also lol, yeah i was pretty clueless at the time but surprisingly he never even tried to hurt him. Would i try it again, nope. He's just starting to get downright mean!

Depends what your definition of odd is
I may not always be right, but I am always the boss
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved

I had my goldfish in with my O for a while. One huge fat goldfish, which I have posted on here somewhere always used to swim in Oscars path and just float ontop of his face???
My O hated this and pushed him out of the way and kept swimming. But as soon as he sat somewhere, the goldfish was right back on him....weird.
When I first got Oshie, I put him in with my goldfish, danios and other (what I now know as 'feeder fish')
Well, as you can see, they started to dissapear......yup, my O realised this was fun, and a good meal!!!

Its hard to fly like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys

I know that my Oscar is weird. He seems to be an exception to most oscar rules. I had him in a tank with two tourquise severum cichlids. they were a breeding pair and became agressive towards him but he held his ground. At this time , my oscar....Chuck Norris was about 2.5 inches long and the cichlids were about the size of my hand. Later, I got rid of the cichlids and got some red tail sharks. they worked out really well with Chuck. But one day, while adding some feeders, a feeding frenzy ensued and one of the sharks was consumed. I later lost the other 2 sharks to a spell of ick. Later on I had some african cichlids and the tank had suffered a leak. I had to rush and place them with the oscar. I watched for a few hours and noticed that they stayed out of Chucks way and he didn't seem to mind the company. I later traded these fish for an albino oscar who is now about 3 inches. Just last night I placed him in with Chuck who is now about 7 inches. Oddly, they spend the day side by side and swim after the goldfish. I find that Chuck shows more agression towards the 10 inch Pleco I have in my tank. Provided you have enough room and the fish cant fit in the oscars mouth. You have a good chance of introducing new friends to your River Dog. Just remember each fish is different and you will have different results than others do. Have fun with it, but watch carefully and have a net ready. LOL
