I have a 6-7 inch tiger oscar in with a firemouth meika(not sure if that is really what its called).they get along good togather never fight.I should probubly mention that i have a 44 gallon corner tank with a 60 gallon filter and 5 inch air stone.should i just have the oscar in there alone.or are they fine togather.

also in my other post penn the oscar wasent eating.could this be because the firemouth is in there.
the firemouth eats flakes or bloodworms.and oscar eats pellets and bloodworms.but never fight over food.if i throw a bloodworm cube in the firemouth will let the oscar eat it and then he will clean up the mess:)
Also can you give me a few other good food ideas that are easy to find.

Oscars and firemouths usually make great tank mates but all individual fish are different so sometimes you can get problems.

Your tank will be a little small for just one oscar so start thinking/saving for a bigger tank. Some say 55g is the smallest for one oscar, some say 75g, so think about getting at least a 75g. Also you will need filtration that is rated for twice the tank size. I doubt your oscar isnt eating because of the firemouth

Other food are prawns, maggots, worms and any insects you can get

I think sometimes you just get lucky with fish that in some circumstances can be very aggressive. Fire mouth cichlids aren't particularly aggressive but they do have their moments just like Severums for instance, these fish are not known to be aggressive but again, they can be aggressive on occasions, especially when they got eggs. These fish may be smaller than Oscars but don't be fooled by their size, they will stand their ground.

No, the Oscar won't refuse food just because there is another fish in there with him. Oscars can be very funny fish, sometimes I put food in, one of my Oscars will swim off as if he is in some kind of mood, it's quite weird I really don't know why they do it. And then when all the other fish have eaten the food, he will decide to come back when there's nothing left, makes me feel really sorry for him, of course than I put a couple of pellets in for him so at least he's got something to eat.

There are lots of different types of pellets available, Oscars loves shellfish such as cockles and mussels. You can feed them squid, fish, you can even mince it up and put it in a little block with gelatine so it sticks together, they love this also. Go to your local fish store and have a look in their freezer, they normally have a large variety of food that is suitable for Oscars.

You can get maggots and worms from your local fishing tackle shop. Worms can also be obtained from the garden (check out the members articles for catching worms). Frozen prawns (defrost them first) can be bought from supermarkets or fresh fish shops. LFS sell frozen lance fish and if you are lucky you can get large krill too

Just have to add my 2ct here.
I've always been keeping a firemouth with my Oscar, and except the Oscar's baby stage, there has never been any problem. Each and every firemouth I've had yet has been on the nasty side, but they just seem to know they can't put up with an Oscar, so they don't dare. I had it only once that my 4" firemouth was really high on adrenaline because I had added another cichlid to the tank, and when the Oscar poked his head into the FM's cave to just look what he was doing, the FM dashed out like a flash and bit him in the lip, and in the very next moment my big baby was shivering in the opposite corner of the tank, funny sight.
So I'd say they generally make good tank mates, although for my fish at least, they have never been buddies like the Oscar and some of my other cichlids, they just ignore each other.
If I were a guy, I\'d have probably needed only 30% of the amount of words to say this
