can i put my oscars with a rtc as may be getting a 8x2x2 tank next week and i like these cats if not i may just get one and keep it onits own in 8x2x2 if you think it will be ok in that size tank thanks peter

Your tank isnt big enough for a RTC, they get to about 3ft in lenght. Also a full size RTC will eat a full size oscar easily- RTC mouths are massive and go from one side of the head to the other

And they get even bigger than that!

I saw one at a LFS, that grew to 2 foot in a year, regardless of the tiny tank he was in.
A 8 footer could do for some time, but you'll have to be prepared for it to become BIG.
Def my favorite fish, but adult RTC can only be kept in the largest tanks, or ponds.
In my case, after seeing a 3 footer go berserk in a huge tank at the zoo, i decided that i couldn't possibly care for a 3 foot fish and give it the space that it needs..
And like Delboy said, a big RTC will LOVE Oscars......for dinner.

Second on my catfish wish list would be a Merodontotus Tigrinus or a Juruense catfish.
They both max at 2 feet (often not reaching that size) and couldt spend their whole life happily in a 8 footer.
those will not eat your Oscars!

I lovethe red tail cats! Wish they were in a smaller version that I could keep though!

dont think i will bother with a rtc then what about shovel nose cats?

I know shovelnoses can get over 3 feet long as well...not sure of their behavior though and if they'd do alright in the 8 ft tank...may be getting on the big side though. Sure you'll get a better answer about if they would work or not though.

Nope, same goes for TSN, or TSN is even worst in a 8 footer.



If you want a shovelnose the 2 i mentioned before will do fine in your tank.
btw Tigrinus is the most expensive catfish i ever saw, 530US $ for a 3"!
Juruense is nice but a bit more affordable.
