sexing oscars is really easy to do. all you have to do is watch them very closely and it will be the female that lays the eggs...

all kidding aside oscars are monomorphic. this means there is no way to sex by looking at them. there is one practice called venting which needs a close examination of the sexual opening but this is only about 75% accurate with oscars and even fishkeepers experienced doing it will never be 100% accurate. unfortunetly the only sure way is to wait for them to spawn.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

How old are they? Oscars don't mature until they are between 12 and 24 months old. And then they may not spawn anyway.

Then they are about 3 months old. Oscars grow at about an inch per month!

just had my first eggs, no way in telling what sex they are until then, when they are spawning you can see there bits the female has an oval shaped bit, the male has one shapped more like a point or a thorn as ofl puts it, evan then my eggs were fertile but daddy eat them all on day 2! your o`s are young and you can expect to wait more than a year but evan then the chance of you having a breading pair with only 2 o`s are slim to none

heres a pic of my eggs

I have never seen my O lay eggs but I have seen it clear the substrate in a spot (as I have heard they do to lay eggs) and spend heaps of time at the spot, even ignoring food for a few days.

Again, I never saw eggs but she was super aggressive (moreso than normal which is a stretch for her) for a week.

She returned to her normal self and I cleaned the tank, including spreading all the gravel back out. She consistently attacked me to the point it became ridiculous and I had to partition the tank and lock her down.

I'm guessing all signs point towards female right? - Not because of the aggression (lol) just the circumstances as a whole.

both male and female will clean an area and guard it as well. unfortumetly this is not an indicator sex.

moreover, as they grow up, they will re-decorate the whole tank the way
they like it.... and you will be surprised they could even rip off your
heater or any other decor inside. but since they are still young, you
can't be sure if you have a pair....
Last Edit: 2 years, 2 months ago by .

Yup they are habitual tank destroyers and decorators, Mine knocks the heater and water outlet all the time. I had to treinforce it by wrapping airtube around it lol.

I came home from work the other day and caught it moving my sofa and coffee table around - damn that Oscar
