TOPIC: Can Silver Dollars be with an Oscar?

Can Silver Dollars be with an Oscar? 1 year, 11 months ago #84708

i have a 75 g tank. i have a jack dempsey, an oscar, an albino catfish, and pleco. the oscar is about 4.5 inches and the jack is 3 inches. and i was wondering if i can put a silver dollar in there. preferably 3 silver dollars. but when i go to petsmart it says the silver dollars prefer aquarium salt. do they have to be in aquarium salt? and if i put them in my tank will it to anything to the other fish cuz i think the silver dollars are already in a salt water tank at petsmart? would the silver dollar die cuz of sudden change to freshwater from a salt water tank?

Yes, Silver Dollars make fantastic tank mates for Oscars. However in your situation this is not a feasible option because you are already overstocked

i agree with penn on both counts. however if you do upgrade to a larger tank then sd's are a good choice for tankmates.

Silver dollars prefer to be in groups. I did have three originally but unfortunately one died, so I have only got two now, they seem perfectly happy together but I don't think I would be keeping them on their own. Depends what sort of filtration unit have got. Also, if you have got one of the very large plecs then once this gets very big, coupled with a large oscar , that will be quite a large bioload. Adding a show of silver dollars could be too much. It's a difficult one, I had two Oscars and 4 clown loach in a 125 gallon tank and I could maintain good water quality, but I had a couple of Eheim 2028 canister filters. I don't think I would attempt to add any more fish unless you've got really good filtration

For future reference, could you please start your own thread if you want to ask a question.

What kind of camera did you use? The photos are fantastic. I cannot get mine to come out anywhere near as well.
