Sup all..... Thinking about getting a blue crayfish tonight. Heard they are great to clean up the bottom. Would those be a suitable tank mate with O's?

Hey, there!
I'm no expert on the matter, but crayfish eat fish.
They may do damage to your oscar if the O would be sleeping on the gravel at night.
But on the other hand i know other members have tried the combo, and things worked out fine.
I myself wouldn't take the risk of my O getting cut.
Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!

I have never had crayfish/lobster before, apart from my dinner plate of course A few things to consider. In order for crustaceans to grow they have to shed their outer skin, in other words the hard shell. They do this every few weeks and are extremely vulnerable at this particular time because they are very soft for a few hours. So you would need some decent hiding places where they can go. It would be no good if the fish could get to them. Also, bear in mind that they may well injure tish at night when they are sleeping.

To be quite honest, I couldn't honestly tell you how successful you would be keeping these two together, you'll have to let us know

I have two medium sized blue crayfish in my 90 gal tank..and they basiclly keep to themselves. They stay hidden pretty much all the time. Each has established its own little cave or crevise and don't interact with my other fish, unless ofcourse if one gets to close they will reach out with a pincher but I haven't witnessed any pinching or cutting. I check my fish each morning before work and then again when I get home and they are all in good condition so I know none have been injured. At least so far.... I added two small freshwater crabs a week or so ago and my 5 inch Oscar ate them. All I found was their claws. I really didn't think my O would mess with them....tho small they had large claws. I think he must have attacked them from behind because my Oscar didn't have a scratch or anything. Hope this helps!

i am not sure if we are talking of the same crayfish specie but
size difference should always have to look into. crayfish normally shed their
shell every month...and will be very vulnerable for oscar attack. a hiding
place is a must but would not guarantee it safety.

Yes thats right.. the crayfish I have Moult like once in 2 - 3 months.. thats their way to grow in size.. now the issue is that.. if you oscar is anywhere near 4 inches and above.. it will ripp apart a crayfish within no time... trust me on this..

and second as many members on top, told you .. when they moult.. they shed their outer shell for a new one.. and the new one is super soft for the first week almost... which does make them vulnerable...

my crayfish are in a tnak with Discus fish.. and they are fine.. only if the fish is too slow, there is a chance the crayfish will get it in the night.. and here by fish i dont mean Oscars.. Oscars are waaaaaay too big for crays...
If it doesn't kill you, it only makes you stronger...
