hello everyone... i was swapped my tanks around yesterday and moved my oscars to the bigger one and the tropicals to the smaller tank... as this tank is a little bit small for the tropicals i was wondering if i could try to get my jewel cichlid to get along with the oscars... also would they attack a normal catfish... all fish are around the same size... oscars are only babies...

I would say that he should be okay. The jewel Cichlid should be perfectly capable of looking after itself. There are quite a few cichlids, just like the jewel that are really capable and and will not put up with any crap from the larger Oscar.I've got a fish called false jade eyed Cichlid and even know this little guy is only around five or 6 inches long, he doesn't take any hassle from the Oscars, the absolutely perfect tank mate. I am sure that you'll find the jewel Cichlid the same
I may not always be right, but I am always the boss

i tried it out this morning.... jewel cichlid eyed of the o's for maybe 5 mins... neither fish seemed worried... then the jewel tried putting it over my o's and started lip locking with the bigger o until he intimidated it... then he started on the blind o and the poor little thing didnt know what was going on (because hes blind) i wanted to leave them to sort it out a bit longer but my partner didnt want to see the blind o hasseled anymore so it had to go back in the tank with the other tropicals. i really hoped it would work too..

Yeah, maybe once the Oscars put on some size they all might be ok with each other. Remembering when I got my Oscar, there was no chance I could keep him with my old firemouth until he was noticeably bigger, till then she would give the Oscar hell. Think jewels can be a bit more aggressive than Oscars as well. Could imagine it to be a nice tankmate somewhen though.
If I were a guy, I\'d have probably needed only 30% of the amount of words to say this

i had to give the jewel cichlid to a friend with a bigger oscar... he didnt even try bullying him but the oscar looked like he was sizing him up, thinking about eating him... but they seem to give each other enough space for them to be suitable tankmates.

jewels have a reputation of being really aggressive. I had one that had to go as he started battering a parrot fish i had at the time. I read somewhere once that jewels will beat up on anything that is smaller than it and will try with bigger fish. You need a fish that will stand up for itself and a blind oscar will not be able to do that so rehomeing it was a good idea
