TOPIC: Mealworm Beetles

Mealworm Beetles 1 year, 11 months ago #98177

I want to feed my 6.5" Oscar live food. I have heard about crickets and other insects but I do not want to house those. I heard rumors about mealworm beetles being the golden food for Oscars. Is this true and if it is will the frozen but still alive giant mealworms at petsmart grow into these. Also he is in a 47 gallon tank and I do not have the means to upgrade his tank. Will he still grow to full size without much problems?

this link is for a picture of him. (ignore the wounds on his head, that is from his old tank) not HITH

thank Paul, you just save me a search!
I think you may be referring to the Morio worms.
They look like mealworms but are oversized.
They are larvae from the darkling beetle too and will become a larger beetle then the normal mealworms.
A 49 Gl can be sufficient if you keep a religious waterchanging schedule, but it's ill adviced.
I can tell you time will come when you will not be able to do the nescecary maintenance which will affect your oscar's health far quicker than in a big tank.
On the other hand i cannot promise that the fish won't stunt in growth.
Upgrade is the magic word.
I got most of my tank for free from secondhand sites, start spotting!

well, my first oscar grew upto 10" in the first year.
If you ask if you can keep the Oscar alive, yeah, sure, with the religious watermaintenance i talked about. LFS do it all the time.
But can you keep him happy and will you be able to do the amount of waterchanges needed, even if it's twice a week?
I mean my bullterrier could survive in his bench for half a year, but it will do him no good and he will not be as happy as walking around in his garden...

On the other hand, what other options do you have?

and I'm pretty serious about my signature.
In oscar fish keeping upgrades are a common thing!
