Here's an oldie but a goodie. Taken back in Jan 2008 when I was new to the hobby.
The 2 Oscars in the video may be familiar to some viewers

Hey, isn't that the lutino i look at over 50 time a day?
If it is, i wouldn't have recognized it...
He got a lot more red around his head now.

@ Cebo: that first vid was yours, right.?
Now i see a gar in there and you stating that it is an alligator gar in there.
Not to be blunt, but i hope you're wrong...

Alligator gars do grow VERY fast and will outgow any of your fish in a couple of months.
He'll outgrow your tank and will have a go at any other fish in the tank.
Getting bigger he'll eat your oscars too...
He'll need a massive outdoor pond or a major big league tank with a massive footprint.
IMO alligator gar is no fish for the home aquarium.

Now i suspect you are wrong with the ID, andd your fish is more likely to be a Florida Gar (often sold as spotted gar) or maybe a longnose gar, judging from the vid.

Both these Gar species do need a large tank footprint, say 6'X 2' the least.
Could you post a close up picture of the gar, just to ease my mind?
Or tell me about the massive pond you have waiting for that gar...

All nice videos.

I like the wild/native looking oscars. I always wanted a pair of oscars straight from the amazon.
4xOscars
1xBlood Parrot
2xJDs (pair)
5xClown Loaches
1xPleco

265 Gallons (84x24x30)
36" T5 Light for shading, sunlight effects
300 Gallon rated Living Color wet-dry sump
3L of SeaChem Matrix + Bioballss, ceramic rings etc...
1xIvy for nitrate filtering

I am always looking for better ways to enhance the lives of my babies. Hit me up, let's chat about fish!

I know some oscarkeepers only like the wild ones, but i also heard that the tank-bred varieties are supposed to be stronger and less susceptible to disease.
But i don't know if that's true.

They sell a lot of wild coloured oscars over here in Holland.
But i think they are pretty dull looking, compared to the cross bred varieties.
And what i heard is that their adult size is a bit smaller that the reds and tigers.

Maybe so.

I saw a video a giant visitor aquarium I want to say in China that had a 17" oscar in it. It was a breath taking video. Very large oscar.

On that note, I read somewhere, that a guy with a 450 gallon tank had all sorts of big cichlids in it, and he said he does a 50% water change every week because larger cichlids give off a growth-inhibiting hormone that limits fish growth in their environment.

He said he had a 17" jag (I think it was a jag) in a relatively short period of time, because he dumped out all those hormones.

Is this true?

i think not, for all fish would do the same thing, to stop the other fish from growing.
I do 50% wc weekly, but that's just to keep nitrates in check.
This will of course provide my fish with the best possible waterquality, and thus makes my fish grow big.
I started out with babies only and now after some years , they are not fully grown yet.
Still growing.
