texas cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus)

i bought this one as a texas cichlid.

"he's" about 5 inches.

I can't remember who exactly but somebody else here has one. I think they are so beautiful. You're lucky to have him, take good care of him !!!

i recently bought a texas as well only mine is a juvie maybe an inch and a half long i put him in my 180.


also as a side note the texas cichlid is the only cichlid native to north america.

thank you. i was a little uncertain about the "name". looking in the book "guide to cichlids" by david e. boruchowitz there is a herithys carpintis. this one is more similar to mine than h. cyanoguttatus.

both are classified as texas cichlids the difference is a regional one. if i remember correctly one(carpintis) is more in the blue range and the cyanoguttatus tends to be more in the green range but dont quote me on that.

The "green Texas cichlid" commonly seen in pet stores is another species, Herichthys carpintis, whose range does not extend into Texas. The common name comes from a physical similarity to the Texas cichlid. The "red Texas" cichlid is not a Texas cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus) but an intergeneric hybrid of Herichthys and Amphilophus parents.
