TOPIC: Green algae build up

Green algae build up 2 years, 9 months ago #48930

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas because I'm a bit stumped.
My 2 oscars have been in their tank for 5 weeks now and are doing fine. During the last week there has been a build up of unsightly green algae on the glass and rocks. I change 20% of the water once a week and the water parameters are steady at ammonia 0,nitrite 0, nitrate 12.5,ph 8.5. I also keep the temperature at 78f and I only have the tank light on 3 hours a day. The tank does not have the sun shining on it either. The only 2 things I have changed are these: I put in 2 large pieces of bogwood and maybe I have increased the feeding a little. I'm a bit confused as the water is always in good condition and the fish seem content.

Regards
Nigel

hi buddy algea is usually a result of sun light a room that has a large window will give enough sun to cause algea i had to move my main tank to the other end of the room sheilded by the chimney breast to get rid of the same problem try this out clean off the algea then cover the tank with a sheet or large towel for a couple of days if the algea stays away your problem is sunlight dont worry ypur fish wont mind at all!!

Thanks a lot chaps. As the tank is in the back room we normally have the curtains closed when we are at work. Since my wife has been at home for the last couple of weeks the tanks has been getting more sunlight. Lucky I'm not abrain surgeon,or any surgeon for that matter.

Thanks again
Nigel

scraping your inner glass wall once in a while help keep
the glass free of this green or brown algae. my two tanks
have direct sunlight the whole day but apparently, i don't
have green algae issue anymore.

Good lord at that price ship me some... I saw the strangest thing today. I was giving my O's and my JD night crawlers... And one of my Pictus cats took the night crawler away from my JD. And ate it whole... I have never seen that before.
