Hi, Nice tank and setup. I cycled my 90 gal tank using 10 2inch Comet goldfish and stress zyme...lost a few gold fish but tried to keep at least 8 in the tank at all times. But overall it worked well and took me about 6 weeks to cycle my tank. I'm kinda new to this too, but someone will chime in with professional advise. As for your problem with the drift wood....I soaked mine in a bucket for afew weeks to get them water logged..them boiled for a hour to kill any bacteria. Hope this helps...good luck!

The wood will soon get water logged and sink. The wood will release some yellow tinge to your tank water. Water changes reduce it but it will take many months to go. I actually liked the look of the yellow tinge

nh3 is free ammonia, nh4 is ionized. the kit is used to detect both types of ammonia.

your ammonia is not too high so that is good.

you need a test kit for nitrate, and one for nitrite. I would just get a master test kit from the LFS, but I got mine online becuase the LFS overcharges.

www.bigalsonline.com/StoreCatalog/ctl368...;hits=12&offset=

this will test for ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, ph, high range ph

you will spend more on each individual kit.

do you happen to have an extra filter thatyou can trade from your existing tank over to your new tank? I did that and my cycle was almost instant. The tank water doesnt hold as much benefical bacteria as you think, it really you filters and the amount of bio media you have in there that keeps your good bacteria (nitrates) up. Even your decor and gravel is only static nitrates, this means that it really only helps if it comes into direct contact. Either way, it all helps the cycle!

I recently did that, I took one of my 4 filters from my current and moved it to my new, and added the new filter to replace the existing. Had nitrates and zero ammonia and nitrite the next day!

my filter on new tank is different then one on old tank my new tank has the carbon and bio rocks in bags with sponge on bottom its the aquaclear 110 if that helps my one in old tank is the tetra one that has the filters that slide in and you dump the carbon into the filter bag and clip it to a plastic frame thing and slide it in. I waiting to buy a canister filter when i get the money. Til then can i run 2 filters in my new tank use my old one and new one in new tank at once or is that too much filteration?

sorry for my late response on this thread.... actually you can transfer your
oscar immediately on the new tank without waiting to cycle it.... all you need
is transfer some old water, fill with a new water, and run the existing filter
in it together with the new one..... once the new filter is seeded with beneficial
bacteria, then you can start the old tank right away using the original filter in it.

You will need to run both filter together for a couple of months

cant really over filter, unless your fish are blown around the tank. The more the better. I run two canisters and two HOBs on mine. I have more than the recommended filtration and I like to keep it like that. You can run both the old and the new filter no problem. I had 2 HOBs on my 55 gal at one point and it didnt even do it justice. I had problems with constant bacterial bloom and cloudy water. Once I upgraded and got the canisters on my big tank, plus the HOBS, its been perfect.

Running the old is a very smart move. If it has not been running and has been sitting idle for more than a few hours, chances are the bacteria is dead on it by now. It needs to feed on the bad bacteria to keep the good alive.
