the texas cichlid can easily be kept alone. they grow to the 12 inch mark and would need a minimum tank size of 55 gallons like an oscar. if you plan on tankmates you should be carefull on what you choose. from my experience the texas is quite aggressive when they start to mature and should only be kept with other aggressive south or central american cichlids
