Like a lot of you, I really like Deadliest Catch. However, I find the program extremely patronising. I fully appreciate that swearing and profanities should be bleeped out before the watershed, however blurring out the mouth when they swear is just treating the audience like little children, it is going too far with censorship in my opinion. For Christ sake, most people swear every now and then, even people who don't swear are going to accept that a program like this is going to contain swearing, for sure bleep it out, but for crying out loud going to the extent of masking the mouth when they do swear is just ridiculous.
Now, you know I love you guys from the USA, but what the hell is it with your country and censorship? This type of censorship does not happen in the UK.

I agree Penn. They need to just open it wide open. It doesn't bother me. If I don't like something, I can just change the channel.

They usually do that when it's, what our country considers, a REALLY naughty word. Like the "c" word for instance. It's 4 letters and rhymes with hunt. That is considered one of the most foul words on the planet in our society, and so that is definitely one of the big ones that gets blurred. Sometimes the "f" word gets it as well if it's a really vulgar use of the word.
Personally I can use almost nothing but the "f" word in a sentence and it will make perfect sense. So no, swearing doesn't bother me in the least bit either. I do have to say that I only use the "c" word when referring to a certain person of the female gender that doesn't deserve to breathe the same air as the rest of the planet. But that's a story unto itself.
Yes Penn, we Americans live in a very prudish, sexually repressed society where everything that "Big Brother" deems bad for us, is censored out "for the children" of course. It's hypocritical and ridiculous in my opinion.

Uhm, i had to think real long and hard on this one.
The difference in pronounciation of different languages is kinda funny , for in my language if you say : you "can" do something, it's translated as : je "kunt" dat doen.
That works the other way around too.
If you have a "paper-cut" it's translated as "Pepper-*unt".
I guess a lot of bleeping and censoring would be needed if Dutch programs were on American television!

I think its just the fact that Discovery is seen as a family channel and alot of kids watch it...I think they know that alot of kids stay up late to watch deadliest catch.
I know the show is aired after the watershed but still...this means my 6 year old can watch it

The bleeping out of obscenities is not so bad, it does happen here, mainly before nine o'clock though, after nine o'clock swearing is not censored much in television programmes, apart from maybe documentary programmes or the news. However, it's the fact that the mask the mouth that really gets to me.
I fully understand parents not wanting their children to hear swear words but at the end of the day, the deadliest catch is not a children's program so I think it should be up to the parents discretion to decide whether their children watch it or not. I had somebody contact me a while ago regarding some content on my website. Basically, they were photos containing non-explicit nudity. They complained that their children came across the photos and they asked me nicely to try and make sure the parental block would stop the photos from showing. Whereas I did implement some text into the description of the photos, I made it quite clear to this individual that if their children were too young to see nudity, then they were too young to use the computer without adult supervision.

Good for you Penn! I'm constantly saying there is no accountability anymore. People hold others responsible for raising their kids, not themselves. (Like the Katy Perry on Sesame Street snafu. STUPID!) If people would stop letting TV, video games, and the internet babysit their children then they wouldn't have to worry about what their kids see. It's called "parenting" people. Try it!
As for the blurring of words, I can understand that Discovery doesn't want that kind of language on their channel. It is considered a family channel, and there are disclaimers, but inevitably there is going to be some ass-hat that lets their small child watch the show and then they'll get all butt-hurt because a naughty word is said. Then there's going to be a huge bruhaha over it and all the pissy ultra-conservatives will come out of the wood work to complain and boycott Discovery. In essence, they're just covering their own asses.

Our society is not necessarily 'prudish' or 'repressed.'
TV/cable Corporations are like states, they establish themselves within fairly broad guidelines nowadays what they will or will not show. If a ceo of a company, like say, Ted Turner is some religious fuckhead then he chooses, and he's perfectly within his rights about that in regards to swearing and nudity, regardless of whether I the viewer like it or not. A far bigger issue to me are purported 'news' channels being used as a platform for censorship, distortion, fear mongering, and furthering religious agendas (see: Fox News, but in response to them other news channels have followed the 'lead' and in turn become biased themselves). THAT s what really disturbs me about US TV. I remember growing up when the NEWS was the NEWS. That's it. And reporters held themselves to a higher standard of objective professional reporting.
With the discovery channel it is clearly defined as a 'family channel' and while I definitely think any child who is raised in a normal house hold should have no issue with hearing swear words or seeing occasional nudity and be ok with it, they are mainly concerned with the public reaction. Even if a just few nutcases decide to protest the swearing (which it would certainly be, as the vast vast majority of people could care less IMO)-- the resultant 'bad publicity' is something they surely don't want, and really it's not worth the hassle just to keep the swearing.
Nowadays there is much, much more leniency than in years past. Mild swearing such as 'shit,' etc. are commonly heard on major channel tv shows, and while there isn't out and out nudity yet the reigns have definitely been loosened later on during certain hours. This would have been unheard of 15-20 years ago, and there was no 'during certain' hours' amendment at that time. Nowadays when our boy George Bush was running the country the FCC tried to fine broadcasts for swearing before 10, but state governments are universally striking that down.
I was just thinking about this the other day. How it's odd that in some ways what we watch has become more regimented due to political correctness run rampant, while in others there is much more freedom. There is a ton more swearing, nudity, and violence and yet...for example, if a cop show shows a 'gang' of criminals mugging some white guy, 30 years ago they might be all black, whereas nowadays you will have a strangely 'multi-racial' gang committing the crime i.e. a white guy and perhaps an obligatory asian or hispanic thrown in for good measure. Just to make sure no one gets 'offended.'

As a matter of interest, what time of the day is the Deadliest Catch screened in the USA? It is screened here at 10 o'clock in the evening on the Discovery Channel. Wouldn't you agree that 10:00 PM is way past the bedtime of young children? I'm not trying to create an argument with you Johnny, I actually respect you for your beliefs as you sound like a good parent to me.
Anyway, whether they bleep out the words or not, it doesn't actually spoil it for me, I really enjoy it, I just wanted to view my feelings about it in this post.

Of course it is past their bedtime...but in all honesty I see no issue with swearing at any 'time,' per se, just depends on the target audience for the show. I LOVE swearing! LOVE IT. I mentioned before I truly consider myself somewhat of a 'connoisseur' of the vulgarian arts. Now obviously it would be inappropriate for Dora the explorer to be dropping 'F-bombs'--funny as hell--but not appropriate. Deadliest catch is probably geared towards adult males between 21-40 I would guess...so whats the big fucking deal? They're SAILORS, for Christ's sake...
Parents need to seriously change their priorities anyways because the internet is one vast unregulated area for kids to see anything, and parents who are upset about 'swearing' on TV aren't generally internet savvy enough to understand they need to be paying far, far more attention to what their kids are watching on the computer...not TV. (however I do NOT want any kind of internet regulation--parents should learn to regulate their OWN computers and do so accordingly).
