Does anybody know whether they manufacture special thermometers that can be fitted over a tap so that you know what the temperature of the water is coming out? The only thing I can find on the Internet patent pending that goes back quite a few years. It sounds like just the thing I'm looking for, whether it ever went into manufacture, I know not.

Never heard of anything similar to what you are looking for. I myself use an old fashioned metal backed thermometer made for aquariums. It's the kind that "used to" fit over the top edge of a metal framed aquarium but now aquariums have a wider edging around them made of plastic and the thermometer will not fit.
It's still a handy thermometer to drop into a bucket, hold under the tap water or dip into a tank too.

I'm amazed that something like this isn't more readily available. I shall keep looking

You can use one of those inexpensive $5 digital aquarium thermometes that are battery operated. They have a thin wire lead and a probe at the end that you normally suction cup inside the tank. Simply run or wrap the wire up your faucet and use a plastic tie to secure the probe in front of the water stream. That should work although it will not be too pretty.. Then you can turn it on as needed to check the temp.
Penn, Did you see the fish I posted in the Pleco thread?

Certainly looks like what I am after. Problem is, it doesn't give you any information about the sort of taps it can be used on. Will it fit all taps, or will it only fit a certain type and shape?
Is there any way you could take some photos of yours being put into the tap and also show some pictures of your tap?
I haven't had any look yet, but I will see if they sell anything similar in the UK
