I think I left my brain at home when I went out shopping this afternoon. I went over to the neighbouring town to do some shopping at the local angling shop. On the way back I popped into the supermarket and on my way out into the petrol station. So the attendant comes out and asked me what I want. "Unleaded please" 20 seconds later, "OH SHIT" my van isn't unleaded, it's diesel. "STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP" 6 L had gone into a virtually empty tank. Anyway, I ran a couple of mates and they told me to fill the tank completely with diesel and it should be okay. I drove home and everything seems fine. I just hope it stays like that. Problem is, this is a brand new vehicle I've only had for just over a week. Been used driving around in a Chrysler Voyager over the last 15 years, now that's unleaded. But the complete wombat I am!

I think you will be fine. Diesel engines will run on anything. They are not called oil burners for nothing. Last year there were stories of people running them on vegetable oil. It the other way round when you have to worry. Diesel in petrol, then you can do series damage

In my old van £20 of unleaded got put into it and it ran fine till it got cold. Then we just about drove it to the petrol station and filled it up with diesel and it was fine after that


We all do dumb things from time to time. I would suggest getting a diesel sign to put near the filler cap and on the dash till you get used to it!

If i were you i would ring the main dealer you bought it from just to make sure it cant do any damage. This could invalidate your warranty.Better to be safe than sorry. This happened to a friend the other way round though. He had a 1959 Armstrong siddeley petrol and he put diesel in it on his way to a wedding. Luckily it was one of the few of his own weddings, im glad it wasn't one of the many he did for me. Turned out ok for me though he had to pay me to do the wedding in my rolls Royce. That taught him a lesson he never did it again.

Hopefully the vehicle will be okay, it's been running fine actually. They marry, I have no intention of telling Mercedes what I did. They were just love that if anything went wrong with the vehicle. They would use it as an excuse I would expect.

Shit happens, but to laugh about it afterwards is good medicine - my new Peugeot (small one - petrol in SA is too expensive to drive comfortable big cars!) got R8000's damage due to a guy who lost control in the rain.... I still don't laugh about that one though
