I know very little about Photoshop, but I have wanted it for quite some time. I have an Acer laptop with Windows XP Pro. Would either Adobe Photoshop Elements 7, or 6 work? I want to be able to edit my pics, some pretty heavily, but don't have a lot of money to spend on this.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

yes it will work, but difference in content between 6&7 is VERY small,
just depends on what you are having to pay for them
and decide

(v8 is also out)

learning to use the dam thing isn't easy and will take many hrs if you want things to look good. they will both work as already advised.but are not cheap.

go for 7 if you can... personally i havent bothered with the CS versions as 7 does all I need, and I actually TEACH it where I work lol..

best way to use Photoshop is to get stuck and and click all the buttons and try all the menu optins to see what they do..

Actually, if you've got a choice I would recommend going for the latest version which is CS4. As Tony has already stated it does most of what PS7 does so if you're not getting into really heavy stuff it would suffice. However, if I want to know how to do something, I normally search Internet for a tutorial. A lot of the tutorials around now are actually made using CS3/4 which has got a slightly different layout to 7, so if you're trying to follow a tutorial that was made using a different version to what you have got, it can be a little confusing because you may be looking for a function which is actually somewhere else in your version. Don't bother with version 6, that is ancient.

I actually bought the full package last year, it contained photo shop, fireworks, Dreamweaver, flash, and quite a few other applications which I haven't really used. What I didn't realize was that they limit you to two computers. Luckily that wasn't really a problem because there are only two computers that I use on a regular basis. Anyway, it's easy to load the software onto another computer and simply deactivate it on the other computer to get it working, they have made it very simple.

Well, I looked up CS4, and it is way out of my budget. I think I should stick with 6 or 7 because they don't cost as much. I'll probably go with 7, since that seems to be the general consensus. I really appreciate the opinions & help. I'm sure I'll have more questions, but I have to leave right now.

Thanks again!

Do you own the little Acer Netbook that came out late last year? I'm not sure it's got enough RAM to run Photoshop....

I have that computer, AND photoshop elements...

Anyway, I suggest photoshop elements... it isn't cheap, but it sure is great.
I use it almost everyday it seems! Haha!

I make animated gifs, logos, banners, avatars and whatever people ask of me with it, but it is very fun to make them too.

Although, sometimes the transparency on it doesn't always come out perfect, like all around it there sometimes is white pixely junk.

Anyway, you may enjoy it, who knows?

my laptop has similar spec. runs fine with PS 7. I am more than certain that 7 will do far more than you will ever make full use of.
