I was wondering about the different kinds of people out there that have a fascination with fish. I feel that its more than just getting a tank, setting it up and plopping fish in it. Many people can do that that and just want it cause its aesthetically pleasing, but they have no true passion for the hobby and do not value the life of one of Gods creatures.

What is it about people like us on these community forums that have compassion, love and the endurance to perservere through the ups and downs of this hobby?

What sets us apart from those that would plop a fish in an uncylced tank, disregard all advice, and just flush the poor thing when it is fighting for its life?

What do we have in ourselves that distinguish a true hobbyist from the fakes that could care less about water changes, diet and water parameters?

Is it something we learn or is it something we are born with?

Even though I have company that have a nothing but good things to say about my aquariums, they also finish the convo off saying that they wouldnt do half of the stuff I do because it seems like "too much work for 'fish'!"

What sets us apart? I would love to hear the philosophy of the next person, because I wonder if my theories match others, or if we may end up in a great debate!

one thing i am sure...people who has compassion with fishes or any other animals
has a soft heart and could do more with human being. if some one could love a
fish that do not give back anything to him/her, he/she could love more on
human being....

as my psychologist daughter told me, any person who could love any animal
without any condition, that person is capable of loving any human being...
i am not sure how true is that but i believe her. anyway, she is my daughter

i know thats right. I studied psychology for a while and philosphy as well. I do wonder why some people are so easy to disregard life.. I never looked at it like that though.. A fish does not give anything back. A dog does with his excited jumps and licks, but a fish just looks at you for food and good water, never says much..lol, and we still love em..

Wow, that is something to think about.

to be honest, i started this hobby as finding a way to continue my passion
with fishes since i grew up in the field with fishes (fishpond)... but my
hobby is somewhat awkward because i harvest what i raised and eat them.
however, it never occur to my mind flushing down sick fishes. i always
consider giving them a chance to survive.... first: it helps me find a
way to cure a sick fish; 2nd: it gives the idea that all living things
has that will to survive.

for all other pets i have, i always take good care of them.
fishes.... oh i love them..my tank is better than my TV.
