australia's quarantine "helping" us...... 2 years, 1 month ago #89264

i was perusing our fisheries website here in aus, when i came across this little article i thought some people might want to look at:

www.daff.gov.au/about/media-centre/aqis-...e_on_prohibited_fish

now i am all for the work that quarantine is doing to make sure illegal fish aren't
brought through our borders, along with diseases, vermins etc.
but taking a fully grown fish out of a collectors aquarium, someone who i dare say would have been treating his fish quite fine, and killing it, is a option?
why not a fine, and let the fish live? as it says in the article "granted its size it must have been bred in captivity".
then why kill it? to prove a point?

would love to hear anyones say

Wow, All I can say is Wow... Why? I get that there is regulations, and I understand why there are, But damn... What was she hurting? She hadn't released it into the wild, she was taking care of the fish. I don't know why they can't leave well enough alone.

that's exactly what i thought. i mean, she was a collector, it would have been well looked after im sure. it was all because we aren't allowed to have those fish without a ridiculously difficult to get licence. so they destroyed the fish.

They probably dont want any accidental releases of the fish into the wild. I was reading and listening on the radio just a short while ago about how in some of the Scottish Lochs that a small crab like creature can't remember its name is decimating the natural creatures in the waters. They have to go out and do a cull every so often to keep their numbers down. I'll try and find out what they are called.

Edit: I don't really see why they killed the Pihrahna. . Seemed legit to me. Guess it's to late to do anything now.
