Hey guys what do you think about this tank for a small Oscar under 5-6 inches? As soon as it gets to that size I have a custom 6foot tank with a small freshwater turtle. At the moment I am cycling the tank as I just renewed the filter media its been running empty (no fish) for 2 days and I have just added a goldfish to help it along. I will be getting some substrate and hidy holes to furnish the tank.(any suggestions?) I was going to use fine gravel with some store bought ornaments and an upside down cracked terracotta pot. I used the tank to house clown fish during my saltwater phase, and Have given it a good flush with fresh water. any comments, questions, suggestions and criticisms are welcome...

Cheers Matt

Welcome to the community

I certainly wouldn't be putting an Oscar of five or 6 inches in such a small aquarium. If you are going to be getting a much-needed tank soon, I won't be patient and get your fish when that is all set up.

Welcome... cute little goldfish you got there!

I have re-read your post a couple times. I think you are wanting to use this little tank as a starter tank and you have a 6 foot tank in waiting? If you already have a 6 foot tank... and no Oscar... just set that big tank up for the Oscar and put him in there. You have the right idea adding goldfish to assist with the cycling. Then just put the Oscar/Oscars in the big tank - they will love the room and grow nicely. I don't know about a turtle though - pretty sure they won't go well with Oscars. Also keeps you from having to transfer them at a later date and possibly stress them out.

I'm sure there are people on here who will disagree with my post.

Brooksie is right on... Turtles and Oscars don't mix. No matter what you see on YouTube.. But I also agree that I would NEVER put an Oscar in a tank that small! Good luck and keep us posted!

X2 for Brooksie and Nicky both.
Get the oscar when the big tank is running.Mine really grew into the tank and was never netted since then.
He's very docile and gentle now.

btw turtles eat fish....and pigeons, if you didn't know.

please get your turtle his own tank...

edit : here i go posting stupid stuff, without a proper welcome!

thank you for the replys. I am very thankfull for the replies thank you, The turtle I have seems to be real placid to live fish as I have hand fed it since it was the size of a 20c piece. I have with him the goldfish that is currently being used to cycle and a couple of little guppy like fish that I bought as feeders the turtle never ate. Im hoping the oscar could clean them up and get me my moneys worth lol. So I was only really planning on having the oscar in the smaller tank untill I felt safe that it was big enough to defend itself from the turtle in the worst case scenario. As much as I appreciate the messages, I would still like to know if an oscar under 6inches be fine in this tank untill it is of size.? untill it is atleast the size of the goldfish thats in the tank now or slightly bigger.

Cheers Matt

Hi Matt, again I will say that I would NOT put an Oscar in that tank... It may look ok, but in reality they produce far too much waist and grow WAY too quickly... The filter on that tank is also no where near big enough to cope with an Oscar so you will quickly run into water quality issues... I would STRONGLY advise against putting an Oscar in that tank.

Thank you... this is closer to the answer I was after. I am pretty keen on getting an oscar as a tank mate, as the tank the turtle is in is well big enough for 1. If I put it straight in with the turtle at say 2inches long and the turtle happens to eat it. 1. Expensive meal and 2. would the turtle get sick/poisioned if it eats the oscar? Im pretty sure people in the amazon eat oscar as a staple meat or so I heard...

Cheers Matt

p.s. On a side note, now what can I put in that tank to make it useful? I would like to stick to Cichlids anything possible? if a 300l/h filter on that tank isnt enough I also have another small internal filter I can get running. I had it (the filter) running saltwater with 2 clownfish and an annenome for 6months with no major water issues before we moved and I had to sell the fish and put the tank in storage.

CHRIST!!! I have never seen something like that before, that is absolutely unbelievable

No, the turtle will not get poisoned, he will probably enjoy it.

Exactly how many gallons is the tank you are talking about?
