Howdy, here are the little cuties today...

The size gaps are widening - mostly the black ones are ginormous and the lutinos are petitos. So I'm going to split them.

My mother in law has on old tank - not been used for 5+ years and had goldfish in it. How do I clean it properly so that I get any nasties out if I cannot use chemicals? Boiling water might crack it?? What do I use? Scrubbing brush and sunlight??? I am a bit OCD with my babies, I don't want to make them sick but I can't afford another new tank right now if I am going to get another good filter.

Suggestions please????

Try using white vinegar and a soft scorer then rinse well works for me

You could give Milton capsules or Milton fluid....its normally used for sterilising baby bottles etc etc.

It works well for fish tanks to...as long as it is rinsed fully.

That's a good idea. Thanx. Gotta get it done quick, 3 got killed and part eaten today and I rescued about 10 to a hospital tank. I know it's survival of the fittest but I want to try to save as many as I can.

That's one to bookmark.
Never heard of it before, but it seems like a good choice.
But should the whole tank be filled and added the Milton to it, or do you use it like soap?

For one of my 2ft tanks I used a trigger spray filled with 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water, sprayed it well and left for a few minutes, then used an old towel and good old fashioned elbow grease to remove the buildup on the glass. Tank came up like almost new.

Thanks everyone for your input. I did some extra research and this is how I cleaned it...

Rinse
Soak overnight in water with about 1% bleach to kill anything and soak off crud.(article said could do 10% bleach but I was wary)
rinse
Scrub with scourer dipped in paste of bicarb soda and vinegar
Scrub any difficult spots with vinegar
Rinse
Rinse
Soak with heavily conditioned water to remove any bleach residue for a few hours
Rinse
Rinse
Rinse

Good as new!

Thanks...Shaz
