TOPIC: Substrate-less?

Substrate-less? 1 year, 5 months ago #112343

I am seeing more and more tanks with little-to-no substrate on them. I am guessing all the good filtration in a sump makes that possible?

Is it a good idea? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Cheers

the use of a substrate is a matter of personal choice. with the increase in efficiency in filters the need to have substrate for bacteria is now not needed.
personally i use a substrate in all my tanks but again its an aesthetic thing not a necessity.....
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

Cheers Necro,

I pondering just a light dusting of sand in my next tank. Something that barely coats the bottom. Something that will give it a slightly sandy look, but be rather sparse.

i concur with cris.... most of my tanks remain bare bottom....not until the wifey
requested to put back the pebbles i had before..... it is much easier to keep the
tank clean at all times when you have no substrates...

if you don't mind to gravel vac, the gravel will hold and cover up any debris that builds up during the week.
That a pro for me.
Plus I like the look better than a bare bottom.
The gravel seems to suit the background and the wood in my tank and makes it complete, imo.
Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!
