I have been going back and forth between bare and sanded bottoms for the new tank, and I am thinking maybe I wish to kind of compromise.

I am pondering doing a *light* dusting of sand so the bottom isn't completely bare, but not enough create the normal 1-2" base that I think a normal tank has.

How much sand would you recommend for a nice, *ligh* shallow dusting of sand?

1/2 pound per gallon?

If I recall correctly normal is 1 pound per gallon.

Cheers to you all.

I can't help you on that one. I did have sand at one point in my tank and it does look awesome. I have a guppy tank that has no bottom and it kind of annoys me because I can see the poop easier. As for how much, not sure my friend! One of the experts on here will know what to do....

i do believe it will depend on the footprint of the tank...my 4 ft tank
uses around 10 kilos (22 lbs) of gravel and it covers the whole bottom
plate at around 1 inch thick....

that would need a lot of sand....i suggest you can buy gradually..
get 3 bags x 40 lbs and spread in the tank... if you feel you still
need some...at least you have an idea how much more you need sine
you wanted it to thin layered...

however...since i believe you will soon have another tank.. buy 5 x 40lbs
just applied it gradually to your desired spread....

if i were to fill in the excavation sites the oscars and texas dug for me it would probably be around 1.5 inches deep. but my footprint is shorter than yours will be. my tank is 72x27 not 96x24

1944 vs 2304.... not much difference when you spread out sand over it...
more or less, the sand will look almost of same deep....
