One oscar needs 55 gallons minimum. A convict will need about 15-20g. Also convicts breed like rabbits, just add water, and when they breed they are very very aggressive. When i had a breeding pair they would follow my finger on the tank like a magnet.

If you cant afford a bigger tank (and you will need one very very soon as oscars grow quick) then rehome your fish or you will have problems with ill fish and eventually dead fish. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but at least your looking into it and learning

If you cant get a bigger tank i would look at smaller fish that grow to 3 or 4 inches

Oscars kept in a tank that is too small very very often get health problems as well as stunted growth. Keeping an oscar in a 30g tank is asking for problems, i would not advise it. Your dad may have been lucky but if you keep your fish in a 30g you will be back on here asking for help with health problems in a few months. Please get a bigger tank or rehome your fish

Do some research on the net and you will find the same message

It can be quite difficult sometimes. I know that not only us here on oscarfishlover, but every other fish forum say that 55 gallons is the absolute smallest tank for one Oscar. However, that doesn't mean keeping an Oscar in a smaller tank is going to give it some kind of death sentence. If you are to carry out several water changes a week, but some pretty good filtration on a 30 gallon tank then you probably could keep the water in an acceptable condition. There are probably people out there who do manage to do it, who are we to call them liars and say that cannot be done? However, I would certainly not condone this, I believe that big fish belong in big tanks. There's nothing more pitiful than seeing a large fish cramped up in a small tank. I am sure that some people have really good intentions, they are quite willing to carry out three water changes a week. But you could bet your bottom dollar that wouldn't last for too long. That is when water conditions would start going downhill. I wouldn't say that tank maintenance is an enjoyable task, the more work you give yourself, the more the chance you have of neglecting the fish. You in general, I am not actually pointing a finger at you.

We are only here to advise and help people, we are certainly not going to try and police the aquatic world, so if you do want to try and keep your fish in the 30 gallon tank, good luck to you, just keep an eye on that water.

delboy and ofl are bang on on this one. personally for the stock you are now carrying i would recomend a 75 gallons tank. especially if you end up with a breeding pair of convicts. you might get away with a 65 but then you will have to monitor your water levels and aggression. also make sure you have enough fitration for your fish(fiter rated for double your tank size).

just my opinion

In a scientifical way of raising oscar, they are all correct. However, if you think of bonsai world of plants, it can be done also with the fishes. big trees being raised in a miniature invironement can be applied to your aquarium. Small area for your oscar will compromise the growth but definitely will survive as long as you keep the correct parameters of water & feedings conditions.

the problem with the "bonsai" approach is that these types of trees have been engineered to remain small over many generation of selective breeding and mutations. there is no way you can do this with say an oak tree. it will grow according to its genetic code. the same goes for fish. if you were to keep a man in a 3x3x8 cell he wont die but will he reach his full potential physically? of course not. the same goes for oscars. a fish that could grow to 14 inches should not be kept in a 36x12 tank. big fish need big tanks. they need room to swim and should have the room to turn around without having to bend so they dont touch both sides of the tank while doing it.

I agree with all of the above
It is not recommended to keep them in a 30 gallon tank
the thing I have a problem with is the pet store...
they should have told you the same thing everyone else
here has said....
the problem is they are looking to sell you something
so they will tell you anything for a sale
now this is not the case all of the time, I know some very
honest and knowledgeable pet shop owners
but unfortunately they are in the minority
if you have any questions about fish
its best to do research before asking a biased pet shop owner
sorry if I offend any pet shop owners
but I have found this to be true in most cases
