all you mention would work together. If you have too many diferant kinds of rock it will look wrong as in nature, say a river below a slate rock face would contain slate but is not likely to contain granit and limestone. I have black sand or very fine gravel not sure what you call it. A mix of flat, and upright rocks a large drift wood and fake plants. I use plants to cover heaters that are each end of tank. I also recently placed a clay jug for fish to hide in. I know in nature a jug can be wrong but most rivers have all sorts in. Just dont use a bike or shopping trolly or dead body.)))))

if you want to emulate the rainforest of Brazil then wood is what you want, really nice big pieces. Substrate can be dark or light. Some nice big rocks will also make it look authentic. Get yourself some fake plants, Amazon swords are good.If you've ever seen footage of the flooded Amazon rainforest, you'll know that it's a pretty murky place. I wouldn't go the whole hog of trying to make it look like that because you may not be able to see the fish.

look upon putting wood in your tank in the same way that you do when rearranging your furniture. You'll probably move around quite a few times until it looks okay. It shouldn't hinder the fishes swimming. Obviously be sensible about the size you put in there.
