Welcome to OFL

no problem with putting your 405 on your 55 gallon tank. You cannot have too much filtration with Oscars. The only query I have is has your 405 been running on a cycled tank?

there is no such over filter in fish keeping. higher
pump capacity gives you more water turn-over. the only
concern is the media in it. if it is not running yet,
you have to utilize all media in the small pump to
seeded good bacteria in it, otherwise, the new pump
will not be as effective as it should be.

imho a 405 is a perfect fit for your 55 and an oscar. it should be more than adequate for the life of your oscar. as stated by ofl and paul the only problem you will have is if the filter has not been running on a cycled tank. if this is the case you are going to have to recycle your tank lwith the new filter. if you have to do this you will need to keep a very close eye on your water readings and do many water change to keep the harmful toxins in check.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

my goal is simple a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all

which one? the discharge point? yes you can.
but putting some agitation on the surface help
to have more dissolve oxygen in the water.
