I currently have a 3ft by 1ft by 15in hospital tank and cabinet. The problem with this is storage and also the temptation to fill it and put some fish in it(a definate no from the g-friend). I have a found a plastic storage box with lid that is slightly shorter but slight wider and higher. I think it is perfect oscar hospital tank size(it would need some modification for cables and filter tubes to go in). As it is plastic (nearly clear) the temptation to fill is gone and it fits into the loft(the cabinet from the old one didnt). This storage case could sit on the floor or a table when it is needed then removed to the loft when not. My problem is the plastic! A fish shop worker once told me that the bags they use to put fish in for us to transport them home are special plastic as normal carrier bags would leach chemicals into the water and thus fish


Anyone know if this is true, also if it is, is it big enough amounts to cause a problem?. Bear in mind that if i had a fish in a hospital tank i would be doing 50% water changes a day. So can i use this plastic storage case as a hospital tank

I don't see why not. Years ago, tanks weren't available like they are now and people would use all sorts of weird things.

If you've got a hospital tank, you need to keep it cycled. It's no good putting their sick fish in an un-cycled tank, especially an Oscar. The ammonia will be through the roof by the end of the day. And the best way to keep a tant cycled, is putting fish in it.

My oscar tank has 2 filters(a fluval 404 and 204) running on it and my general cichlid tank has 3 filters(2 405's and a 204). I have a spare filter equivalent to a 404/405 in size(think its a rena). So if I needed to set up a hospital tank i would use a 204 from one of my tanks and put my spare filter(the rena) onto that tank i took the 204 from. Thus i can have a hospital tank ready to go(cyled) without having to have fish in it. The problem with having a hospital tank with fish in it is what so you do with them when you wanna put a sick oscar in! Other even bigger problem is g-friend says NO and i mean NO to anymore tanks!!!!!

Having a spare filter running on a cycle tank is probably the best way if you ever come to hospitalising fish. I would actually take some water out of the tank and put it in their hospital tank and then run the filter on it, you then just a fully cycled tank ready for the fish. I think it's easier to do that than actually having another tank that you have to maintain. As soon as have got my 300 gallon tank setup, I'm going to get a small filter I run it on a 125 gallon tank and discontinue the 20 gallon hospital tank which I got running at the moment. Unfortunately, the fish and there are getting a little neglected. I've only got a few guppies in there. I think I'll put them in a 300 gallon making keep the Oscars Company. I'll probably put them in their first. Hopefully when the Oscars go in there eventually, they won't take too much notice of what's in there already

I cant see them guppies lasting long with oscars about!!!!!
