darkhorse419 created the topic: Debating changing from river rock to sand...

I have been thinking about changing one of my tanks over to a black sand substrate, but can't seem to bring myself to pay that much for substrate (I use HD/Lowes River Rock & Pea Gravel in my tanks now) so I have been looking for alternatives. I am also debating on changing another one over to pool filter sand, but can't seem to find it a local hardware stores like people suggest (I keep getting the :S look from employees when I ask!!). I have included the link to some stuff I found pretty regularly in my area and comes in black or white :woohoo: but I can't find any info to see if anyone has used it in there tanks and what (If any) should I be careful of?? I am really curious as to what sands are compatible with our aquariums, so any links are greatly appreciated!!! I just did my background in black, and think the black substrate will set my Red Devil off!!

Here's the stuff I found (Everyone has the white, a few have black):

Silica Sand (B25 or S25)

I used Ace Hardware pool filter sand in mine, and have brown algae difficulties. From what I have read, silica sand can contribute to this.

In the future, I plan to shy away from silica sand and explore alternatives.

With that said, and having used both sand and gravel as a substrate, I prefer sand for ease of vacuuming.

Silica does contribute to that but it will disappear over time. Give it a year.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.
