Ive been given a 77g tank from a friend whos leaving town. Its domensions are 40 cm wide 125 cm long and 60cm high. What do you think would be better suited a jd or a jag? I really want both but i know i can only choose one haha.

Way too small for a Jag, they can exceed 16ins. JD would be fine.

The JD would be better. The Jag would survive, but much better to be in a larger tank if possible. Why are you limiting yourself to those two fish? Lots of other kinds of large cichlids to consider too for this size of tank!! B)

Like poseidon said lots of options. Not sure how jd would do by himself (might hide allot) may need some dithers. Could do some acara types (metae, blue, electric blue) with crytpoheros (nanolutes, sajica, panamensis) and dithers. Chocolate cichlids are nice too.
Look up some of the viejas some get big but there are a few that could work (by itself)

I think you would be pushing it. Check out honduran red points too. jd can be aggressive im not sure that I would put another cichlid in that tank with them maybe the others can chime in.
Heres a pic of my yellow acara
