Broom created the topic: Tank upgrade

Hi all,

I've consulted this website for several months since buying my first tank and Oscar. I'd like to thank all the members for the useful information and articles.

I've owned the Oscar since September and he's now around 6 inches. My current tank is a fluval Roma 200 litre but I think the Oscar is ready to be upgraded.

I've purchased a second hand juwel Rio 300 which holds 350 litres that I have yet to set up.

My current tank has an established efx 300 filter that has been running since September.

What is the best way for me to transfer the fish to the new aquarium.

Thanks

Assuming that the new tank will be ready to take the new fish straightaway, you should just use a large net and transfer the fish from one tank to the other in one go. Obviously make sure the water temperature is as close as you can so you don't shock the fish. 6 inches isn't very big, so the fish probably won't give you too many problems, although it will splash as you lift it out of the water so expect some water flying around.

Transferring a fish from one aquarium to the other is fairly easy, although Oscars don't particularly like being taken out of the water so you need to do it quickly with a lot of confidence. Like I said, a decent aquarium net should be used so there is no chance of dropping the fish.

We made this video a few years ago, it should be helpful

Thanks for the reply.

The new tank isn't set up yet and has no water in there. I was thinking of emptying the current tanks water into the new tank then filling the rest with new water.

If I were to use the established filter on the new aquarium would this cause any cycle issues like a mini cycle

Do not use old tank water. There is nothing in it to aid in the cycling of the new tank. Its your filter that is important. Fill the new tank, use dechlorinator if you are on city water. Attach the filter and get it running. Scoop the fish up and in he goes. Match the tank temp within a degree or two of his existing one. Oscar may pout/hide for a while, maybe a week, maybe a few hours. Nothing to worry about. You will also need to increase filtration. Keep the one you have, add something bigger. A medium sized canister would be the best bet, or at least a big HOB like the Aquaclear 110.

Thank you i won't bother using the dirt tank water.

The new tank comes with another efx 300 filter so it total it'll give me 2200 lph. I was hoping this would be enough for the tank but if not I can upgrade to the fluval fx6.

One last question, should I add an amonia source to the new tank so the BB in the filter have something to feed off before I add the fish.

if you are going to use two different location of tank:
1) you can set the new tank in new location;
2) fill-in with new water add anti chlorine (if new water has chlorine)...
3) transfer the existing filter in there... and run it...
4) transfer the fish....

using same tank location:
1) shut off the filter:
2) empty the old tank until can be lifted;
3) set the new tank and fill with new water
4) transfer the old filter once the water level is deep enough for the old pump
5) run the old filter set while filling the new tank..
6) transfer the fish and continue refilling the new tank..

optional... you can transfer all media from old filter to new filter to seeded the new filter

Thanks for all the advice.

Completely off topic, but for those who have seen the Rio 300 or are familiar with the tank, would you think it's big enough for a single Oscar for it's life time.

yes... it can hold one big oscar for a lifetime... rio 300 is a 350 liters tank
equivalent to 92 gal... so you are good to go with one oscar

The fish are now in and all is set up. The water is a little cloudy but that should settle in the next day or 2. The Oscars had a pout at first but are now exploring their new home. The one Oscar is going to a new home tomorrow so it'll just be the one Oscar.
