Jamal created the topic: Switching stands

Hey guys I just bought a new stand for my 55 gallon tank and I was wondering what's the best way to swap the stands. I currently have it on a table that my aunt had it on but the filter started leaking and the table is starting to warp and I guess rott on the back. Would I have to take all the fish & water out or can I take 3/4 of the water out leave the fish in the tank and just swap them out? I'm leaving it in the same location. Also I don't want my Oscar to die

Well, unless you've got a couple of mates who take part in "the strongest man in the world" contest then I would suggest that you will need to take all of the water out before you try and move the tank. There is absolutely no way you will move that tank with all the water in it, not even a quarter full, it's just too heavy and would be very dangerous even to try.

If you get a large bucket and fill it with existing tank water, your Oscar should be okay for a while, at least long enough to get enough water into the new tank. What I would suggest is removing water and then only take the Oscar out when you need to, in another words when the water level reaches the Oscar. This way, he won't be in the bucket for too long.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Put your Oscar in the biggest container you have. Plastic tote, rubbermaid bin, a cooler, whatever. Regardless if you can lift the tank with water in or not, dont do it. Drain the tank, wipe the glass, clean the gravel/sand. Do a filter cleaning. Place back on your new stand and treat your Oscar to 50 gallons of fresh water. The whole deal shouldnt take more than an hour, and your fish will be just fine.

I may not be the Boss, but I'm ALWAYS right!
