Right on schedule! You can tone down the ammonia to 1. You need a minimum .25 ammonia and nitrite to feed bacteria. As soon as you see bare minimum nitrite, its go time. Next weekend is my bet. Well done!

That's good man. Your having better luck than I am. My ammonia is still at 3ppm and it hasn't went anywhere. I keep looking back in my journal and seeing that I started in the beginning of February. It wouldn't be such a big deal if my son wasn't so excited for the fish. I am considering just emptying the thing completely and going a different direction unfortunately I don't have any means of getting anything to seed my aquarium.

My nitrite is still spiked, no sign of it coming down yet. It looks like the bio filter is chewing through about 4ppm of NH3 per day. I topped up the tank to 4.07ppm yesterday, and 24 hours later it is between 0-0.25 (seems a little green, but it might be zero).

Anyway, I'm going to be out of town until Monday afternoon. Do I need to worry that the last time I can dose ammonia is Thursday morning? Should I put in extra ammonia? If so, how much? Should I stop at the pet store and buy a danio to poop in there while we're gone? Maybe throw in some fish food or something?

Suggestions are welcome.

Well I decided not to do anything different and hope for the best.

I added 9mL of NH3 before I left on Thursday. When I got home yesterday, I added another 9mL. I just now tested the water. Ammonia is zero, and nitrites are down to 0.5ppm. I added another 9mL of ammonia and will continue to post updates.

I'm hoping my nitrites are down to zero by the weekend, and I'm happy that my bacteria didn't die while I was unable to feed them. Hopefully I'll be getting the fish soon. Bacteria alone make pretty boring pets.

Today is the day! I'm heading to the pet store. I did one final test of the biofilter before adding fish, and in a little over 18 hours, it converted 4ppm of ammonia into 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrite, and 35ppm nitrate. I did a 100% water change and all levels are at zero now. I've attached a table for anyone interested in the details.

I do have one final question. Is it normal for that amount of ammonia to generate so much nitrate? If so, I hope that the fish generate a lot less ammonia, since those numbers would indicate DAILY water changes. Maybe there were concentrated nitrates left in the substrate that leached out overnight from day 46 to 47? Thanks to everyone who has been helping!
