Ok...so I am cheap I will admit this before I go on

I have access to a few pounds of clay, and as it so happens, I also can use a kiln. I was kinda thinking I could make my own custom structure for a cichlid tank. On top of being cheap, I think this might turn out pretty cool looking. I could put a glaze on them to make them easier to clean too. I've seen a ton of ceramic, and terra cotta pots in tanks. You guys think this would be ok?

So far I have gotten an answer to every single question. I have scoured this site, and I can't find anything on this subject.

From my history with clay, as long as the glaze is food safe I would think it would be safe for your fish. And way cool!

I don't know for sure but I read to use clay pots without glaze, I'll try to find more info for you.

This one says it's safe and I use this site a lot for all kinds of questions but I'm still unsure. If I was you I'd wait till the Boss or the mods say something. Since you do this yourself you probably know what glaze is made of, please let us all know

I'm not positive what the glaze is exactly, I know it's made by Duncan.

Thanks for the link, I will check it out.

I'm an art teacher and I've made something small for my tank with no problems. Being glazed def. makes it easier to clean. Just make sure the glaze is leadfree and listed on the bottle food or dinnerware safe, this means it's safe enough to eat or drink out of so it's ok for your fish as well, it won't leech toxins into the water. If the bottle does not say dinnerware safe or have a symbol of a knife and fork assume it is NOT ok. The really pretty decorative glazes with different crystal effects are usually NOT ok. Just make sure you read the label. As for applying the glaze do at least three even coats and do not glaze whatever part will be touching the kiln shelf, otherwise it will stick! Good luck and happy creating!
