1 US gallon = 3.7854118 liters
1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609188 liters

I think it's probably worth mentioning that this website is run and maintained in the United Kingdom. The UK, or Imperial gallon is larger than the US gallon. This website recommends 55 gallons for one Oscar. So remember that 55 UK gallons is larger than 55 US gallons.

my freind has bought a new tank recently, it's 2.5'(length)x1.5'(height)x1.5'(side), how much is that in UK gallons?
100 US Gallon Tank - 1 Tiger Oscar (Tiger);
1 Common Pleco

30 Gallon Tank - 4 Angels (1 Veil Tail, 1 Albino, 2 Marble)

Re:UK gallons compared to US gallons 4 years, 3 months ago #10483

Keep in mind that it should be slightly more than this, considering that those measurements are usually slightly more than the exact foot/half foot.

but, approximately 40 u.k./imperial gallons - 42 u.s. gallons - 164 liters

So, the difference is small. but, add an inch to each of those measurements, and it is closer to 45/48/188 respectively.

I think mine actually measures 13.5" in width, but it is very common to say a 55 u.s. gallon tank is 4' x 1' x 1.5' ... even though that is just rounded off figures. A tank that size would only be 45 u.s. gallons ... which I know it isn't since I have filled it with 5 gallon buckets

1 u.s. gallon equals approximately 0.83 u.k./imperial gallons.

your tank works out to be around 50 UK gallons

there are several differnt new cichlids that can be housed in a 50. jack dempseys, firemouths. severums, this list is quite long. however if you are willing to do the work involved(water changes) you could keep a single oscar in a 50 for a while while you shop around for a larger tank. just a thought

i dont think anything is a personable as an oscar but my jack is most enjoyable,(when he's not picking fights with my other fish) they can be a little aggressive but a 50 should be enough room for a pair of them(male and female of course)

i am keeping a male and a female jack at this time and i am planning on housing them i a 55 gallon tank. its true that a 55 is the minimun for a pair of jacks however they do not grow like oscars do. my male jack is about a year and a half old now and he is only about 7 inches in length. they are not the same as o's when it comes to bioloads either. until recently i had the pair in a 30 gallon tank and just recently moved them because it was gettting a little crowded. even in the 30 my nitrates in that tank never surpassed 40 ppm and they are both healthy and happy. also for the record when looking on most websites for tank size they usually give in american gallons not imperial gallons.
