I added a koralia 3 to my oscar tank 2 weeks ago, and it has been a great addition to the tank. I place it in the area with a dead spot and it circulates the water all thru the whole tank, in addition to disturbing the water surface to increase oxygen exchange. Yesterday I did performed a water change and the water that was siphoned out from the gravel was noticeably clearer than it was before, probably because the filter is able to suck in more particles (slows down particles from settling onto the gravel) thanks to the propeller.

I'm also inclined to think it causes the heater to turn on less due to better water circulation, but it's hard to tell. The propeller itself only uses about 7.5 watts, while the heater uses 300 watts. That means a reduction in the heater turning on 1.5 minutes less per hour due to better water circulation from the propeller means the propeller is saving you money on the electricity bill! (I think I got the math right..)

A worthwhile investment, I highly recommend it!

powerhead is basically design to aerate or agitate the water
in the tank. once you install one, there would be no dead spot,
water will circulate according to your directional pattern.

regarding the heater, submerge powerhead emit heat, thus it
will lessen the heating works of your heater.

Thanks for the info Paul. The propeller has been a great investment, one of my oscars love to play around it too. It keeps the water column crystal clear.

paul, does those powerheads go hard? i tuned my flow of my filters down to get less current in the tank cuz it was really heavy, but now i read here that it is good to have some strong current then ?

for canister type filter, discharge pipe are usually corrugated
or slotted to evenly distribute aeration or in order to spread
out whirling effect. the process enhance aeration, agitation and
to create directional water current inside your tank. for bigger
tank, powerhead is used to avoid dead spot in your tank. fishes
usually love mild current or water movement and most of the time,
they swim against the current.

corrogated feed tubes for canisters also prevent kinking of the pipes but pauls got you covered here .....

good currents are fine but try to spread the flow by using some kind of diffuser or widening. most filters have a wide opening fitted to the hose to allow this. What you need to avoid is very strong flow through small openings as this can damage the fins as the fish swim across the flow. one way to break the flow is point it at the surface
