I always recommend using extra filtration. There is no such thing as too much filtration with the Oscars. What you want to understand is that using extra filtration will help you in two ways. Firstly, you can have extra mechanical filtration, this is what removes solid waste. And very importantly, you can increase your biological filtration, this is what deals with the toxins such as ammonia and nitrite.
0 So, when you set your filters up, pay close attention to your biological filtration. Get as much in your filters as you possibly can. Mechanical filtration can be cleaned once a week. You can also siphon the gravel/sand once a week to remove any waste that the filters haven't taken out. Too many people are more interested in having their water looking like it's just come out of a spring than actually concentrating on the more important things such as stopping your fish becoming poisoned by ammonia and nitrite
