I am wanting to change my tank over to sand and just have a question about it. My question is should i buy the sand from a petstore that is made for aquariums? Or can i buy some play sand from a hardware store that will cost a quarter the price of the sand from a petstore?

Sand from a LFS is good but expensive. Play sand is good because it isnt sharp and wont cause your fish injuries. Normal building sand would be ok and its real cheap, i would steer clear of sharp sand

basically, construction sand and lfs sand are the same. the only
difference is that lfs sell sand that had been screened and graded,
but both will be fine to use in any tank.

In the uk we have different types on construction sand. The most used types are sharp sand, latent sand and building sand. Sharp sand has little pebbles in and latent sand has something else added (cant remember what). Building sand is just sand and so that is the one to go for when using it as a substrate for a tank
