I was thinking of putting a pot in my tank for my sea monster of an Oscar "Sir Henry Morgan". are there certain types to avoid and do you have to do anything special to the pot before you add it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You should be okay with the majority of pots now, in most countries lead has been banned from paint so that shouldn't cause you any problems, I'm not aware that there's anything else in paint that can cause serious problems, but don't hold me to that. If in doubt, just buy a plain pot that has not been painted at all. Also, make sure your pot has not got any sharp jagged edges that fish could injure themselves on.

I used Terracotta pots for my tank. I soaked each one underwater for about 20 min. This cleans the pot and makes it softer so you can make a hole at the base. After you soak it, get a hammer and nail and make holes in a circle then tap the center to make your opening. Next get some sand paper and sand it down good so there isn't any sharp edges. Hope this helps!

be sure you dont get a glazed pot. there are heavy metals frequently used in the pigments.

i have a thread smoewhere aruond here where i discussed my proccess for curing terra cotta before adding it to your tank. i soak it in a bucket of tank water for a week before i do anything to it, u can knock the bottoms out and split it in half without it shattering if you do that. i have them in all my aquariums. just for safety sake wear some sort of eye protection when you mod your pots.
