I'm moving to a new house in about 2 weeks. I currently have an Oscar in a 55 gallon and he's outgrowing that so I just purchased a new 125 gallon which will be delivered on March 3. So I have to postpone moving all my furniture etc. until after I move Oscar. I'm just not sure how to move him, I have a large net, but not sure what to put him in to get him to the new house, it's almost a half hour drive, and it needs to be something I can lift. I plan to set up the tank on March 3 and then move him on March 4 to the new tank. Then go back and emply the 55 gallon before the movers get there to move that tank and the furniture... it all seems a bit daunting....wonder if anyone else has moved with a large oscar?

Okay, this will be a very wet job and should be quite simple and safe for your Oscar. I would suggest you go to your tropical fish shop and ask them for the largest fish bag they have got. Get ready to leave the house so that transferring the Oscar into the bag is the last thing you do. If it is only half an hour, there should be enough oxygen in the bag and the water shouldn't go cold too quickly. I would suggest that you gradually turn your water up to around 28°C, maybe even slightly warmer so that if it does cool down, it won't drop below 21°C. Oscars are perfectly okay in 21°C water. You could put it in some kind of insulated bag to try and stop the water cooling down to quick. Or the best thing to do, is whack the heaters up in your car so that it is really warm. Just don't fall asleep when driving

if you cant get hold of a bag from the fish shop use a large bucket with a garbage bag as a lining so the fish will not hurt itself,i have done this myself and the fish have always arrived safely:cheer:

Since I have been lucky enough to live in apartments the last few years my Oscar has had to move a few times with me.

The trick I came up with and have been happy with is I have a Coleman camping cooler that I will put my 9 inch Oscar in. I only use the cooler for my fish so other items can't contaminate it. It has a hinged lid that is locked down by the handles to limit any spilling. Its large enough that he/she fits nicely and the water temp doesn't vary too much.

I remove all the items from the tank then use as much of the tank water as I can to try and lessen the stress on the fish.

Its small enough and light enough that I can pour him/her from he cooler to pre-setup tank. The last time I netted my oscar I got soaked from the splashing.

I would go to your local fish shop but dont ask for a large bag. Most shops have polystyrene boxes for moving large fish. Ask if you buy/have one. Fill it with just enough water to cover your fish if weight is a problem. Put tape across where the lid and base meet to stop the lid coming off
