Well when I got my brother over today to move my tank off the stand so I could reseal it this weekend I noticed a chip of glass in the back corner of the tank on the outside...its where the two panels meet. I know we didn't do it and I don't know how I missed it before. It doesn't look too bad and its not radiating off any cracks or anything.

Anyway...i'm resealing this weekend and I remembered something mentioned about using an epoxy to reinforce the area with the chip in it. Just wondering what type of epoxy to use??? Any help would be appreciated. And BTW I will be filling it in the basement next to a floor drain once the silicone cures on the reseal so if something does happen it shouldn't do any damage.

Assuming I reseal the tank and epoxy the chip do you think it should be ok?

I would probably use something like araldite, it is mixed from base and hardener, and is quite thick in consistency, it is used over here as a glue but it is very strong and cures solid...

I use marine resin in one of my hobbies and its great, but it is quite liquid and would need some sort of shield making to keep it on the corner of your tank, although you could use plasticine.. you could encase the corner of the tank then sand off any excess...

hope this helps

in what plate is the chip????? if it is in the wall, no problem.... but if it is
in the bottom plate.... make sure you do not have any unbalance mounting floor
for it will be the breaking point.

i suggest further to fill the chip with epoxy after resealing the whole tank.
it more practical to refill it when sealing is done.

point to remember: do the resealing one corner at a time. do not rush removing
all old sealant leaving any one panel loose. you will find it difficult to
hold it in place when sealant not yet cured

and read the instructions on how long to let the epoxi cure.
For in tank use it's recommended to let it cure for a month...

and you will be frustrated by then if it does cure for a month....

remember my 110 gal tank, i had use epoxy inside when the pang bang the glass
and the sealant leaked. (fish inside the tank)

the way 2 part epoxy resins works is by a chemical reaction, and USUALLY if it hasnt cured within 24 hours its because the mixture of resn to hardener isnt right, which leaves molecules or either one floating around (hence not curing)..

also it is imperative to follow the recommended curing instructions re: temperature and many resins wont cure below a certain tmperature..

If you bought the 100% silicone from the hardware store leave it for 48 hrs... You will be good to go...

Thanks for the replies everyone! The chip is on one of the side plates and not on the bottom plate.

So Nicki and Win- you think if I just reseal and use silicone to cover the chip I will be ok? Just thought it would have to be something harder when dry. I know the guy I got it from had it setup for a long time and downsized to a smaller tank so this one did hold water fine for him.

I wouldn't worry about it really... I have several tanks with a similar chip and never had any problems. Just make sure that the inside seals are good!

Thanks! I'll reseal this weekend then and maybe just add a little silicone to the chipped area and hopefully that will work. Like I said I know it held water for a long time before I got it so i'm not overly worried about it. Just wanted to make sure I did it right
