TOPIC: Is my tank setup okay?

Is my tank setup okay? 2 years, 5 months ago #67213

Tank Size - 75gallons
Filters: Marineland Emperor 400
Fluval 405

Substrate:Black sand

Tank stockings:
1 Oscar
4 Silver Dollars
Maybe some snails as well

I was not sure how to make the tank I wanted to give the silver dollars a place to hide. In the middle by the rocks there is an opening in the back so they can hide.
If you have any suggestions for better hiding spots please tell me.

Be harsh and let me have it. The tank is almost done cycling so I wanted to an get experts option on my tank setup.
Sorry for the bad cell phone picture

I don't think you are doing too badly at all. Good filtration and not too many fish. Silver dollars normally maxed out at around 6 inches but are quite slow growing. You're probably right at your limit so I certainly wouldn't be thinking about adding any more fish, just keep a very close eye on your nitrate levels, I like to think that you can easily leave the tank for a week without needing to change the water. However, if you're my trait levels are soaring within two or three days and then you obviously have too many fish.

Silver dollars are schooling fish and probably won't use any kind of structure to actually hide in. You may find that they seek cover when sleeping but during the day they will be on the move all the time

I dont plan on anymore fish and I will certainly keep an eye on the nitrate levels. Thanks for the suggestion I will take the rocks away or lay them down so the Oscar has more room

How big are the rocks? I would actually advise against putting too much in the smaller tanks because you cause water displacement. Whereas a sizeable rock isn't going to cause too much water displacement, you want to be making the best of what you've got if your tank isn't on the large size.

i agree with the boss. i had a huge pile of rocks that i made a cave out of for my syno catfish... and when i took them out i probably gained 20 gallons of water volume back.
plus, fish crap will get trapped under any decorations. so the fewer the better.
Please, for my sake, change your oil!

looks fine, I too was going to say the rocks may get pushed over so make sure they can't scratch the glass or even break it. the plants may get moved about by the fish( to drive you mad))) but I agree nice choice of fish too. Enjoy
