well a friend of mine moved house afew weeks ago and donated me his rather large fish tank. obviously i acepted it gladly but had no idea what to do with it...had it for a while now and really didnt think it would be for the best to have yet another tank, but this morning i went on the garage to grab one of the saddles to put on ebay but ended up bringing the tank inside and now its cycling ready for nest week. the mrs def wont b happy when she sees iv set up another tank!
dont think ill be putting anything too flash in it. been looking recently into getting a snakehead, anyone kept them before or know how big they get? only seen them in shop and there pretty small. dont know anything about them! need to do some research so starting here with the experts!

I'm not an authority on the snakehead but I believe that they are actually a banned species in some states in the US. They can get quite big, in excess of 24 inches in the wild. They're also escape artists and are one of the few species of fish that can actually breathe air, so make sure you have got a really substantial lid or one day you may find the tank empty. They are ferocious predators so obviously keeping any other fish with them could be hazardous. Apart from that, that is really all I know about these fish.

cheer boss.
iv seen them for sale in my lfs in york near my uni but the shop assistant knew nothing about them. after looking more online iv found out they need very heavily planted tanks and access at surface to breath air. seems like iv managed find another fish i really want but is inpractable to keep...ill put it on that list with arowana!!
anyone know anyone who actually has one?

Nothing is impractical to keep if you can provide it with the correct living requirements. If you have a big enough aquarium then you probably could keep one successfully, however. From what I've seen of them you would need an extremely large aquarium if you are really serious about keeping them properly

yeah i know wht yr saying, unfortunatly the tank iv now set up is large but i wouldnt say it would suit a large snakehead now uv mentioned how big they get! sure ill find somthing to put in it....in fact to keep the mrs sweet i may let her stock this one...although we'll probably just end up with more friggin angel fish!

if snakehead is unavailable due to legal reasons, you might try a bowfin aka grinnel. its practically the american version of the snakehead. ive caught them on rod and reel, and when they spawn they carry the most amazing green colorations on them. so beautiful.
