Hi all, looking for some advice on my new setup, been running a 45G(please dont give me grieve i know i fell for the oldest mistake of not knowing what i was taking home with the oscar but im working to remedy that now!) for 10mths with a eheims 2215 stocked with a red oscar(now 10inches),2 firemouths and a keyhole, everyone is in mint condition and happy, with perfect water parameters,i knew it was only a matter of time before upgrade needed so today i ordered 100g(6ft)tank,what i need to know is whould i be better getting a second 2215 or using my old tank as wet/dry sump filter(very competent practically but never built sump filter),the key point influencing the decesion is the tank is located in the bedroom, also would i be able to add a jaguar to this new set up or is that ill advised, thanks in advance

even a 100 g tank isnt big enough for a jag!

"
One single Jaguar cichlid can be housed in a 125 gallon (473 liter) aquarium. If you want to keep it in a community or habitat aquarium, the other species will naturally affect the recommended aquarium size. It is not advisable to create a community/habitat aquarium with a Jaguar cichlid if your tank is smaller than 180 gallons (681 liters). A breeding Jaguar cichlid couple should also preferably be provided with a 180 gallon (681 liter) aquarium or bigger."

male jags can grow over 55 cm, 1.8ft. thats a big damned fish. and that 100g tank isnt even big enough for one jag by itself, NOT TO MENTION oscar's are not agressive enough to keep up with jag's. they are just too big, and too mean for an oscar tank unless that tank is "HUGE"

Welcome to the community. I am quite familiar with Eheim although I've never had to 2215 before so I had to have a quick look at the specifications. It seems that they are rated for 350 L which is around 77 gallons. We normally advise having twice the amount of filtration if you are keeping Oscars so even 2 of them probably wouldn't be quiet enough if you want a good turnover rate.

If you are capable of constructing a sump filter and fitting onto the tank remembering that it will probably have to be drilled inside the tank and the cabinet then definitely go for one of these. I've got one running on my 300 gallon tank that is around 70 gallons. However, I think it would definitely be a good idea to keep your canister filters running as well as a sump.

I am also a going to be redesigning my sump very soon and replacing the one I have installed on my tank at the moment so this could well turn into quite an interesting thread.

for a 100 gallon tank, imho the best way to filter it would be with a couple of canister.
sumps really only come into their own on larger tanks(200+ gallons). and like ofl stated you would need to drill or create an overflow to get the piping into a sump.

as for a getting a jag for your tank i have a couple of them and they are by no means a community fish. males can grow to very large sizes and are quite aggressive. oscars get large as well but are not even in the same league when it comes to aggression. i found from personal experience that jags can create a lot of havoc in a tank in a short amount of time and it is best to keep them with other aggressive guatopes if you plan on any sort of community setting with them.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

Thanks for the input everyone, guess jag is out of question then!,think ill forget sump filter. As i need a larger second cannister filter are the eheims with the built in heaters good or am i better going with a couple of in line heaters, also is it worth investing in a uv sterillizer, taking the oppurtunitty to ask questions while i can, reason sticking with eheims is my 2215 is unbelievably quiet

Because your tank isn't particularly big, you're really not going to be able to keep that many fish so a sump filter isn't really going to benefit you much. If you really wanted one and no one is saying that he can't have one, it would give you everything you want and more. However with much larger aquariums with many more fish that create a much larger bioload these filters really do work very well indeed.

The thermal canister filters are quite good, obviously you don't have to worry about installing heaters into your tank, however they are quite expensive and it may actually be cheaper just to get something like a couple of Eheim 2028 canisters that will give you tons of filtration, more than enough. And then all you really need then is one 400 W heater which will be more than enough for your tank. I really wouldn't bother with any filters that air inside your tank, they are really meant for smaller aquariums, you're much better off going for filters that are made for large tanks.
