I think you'd be better off finding a local source for your wood. You can buy wood online but most of it is just very small pieces. Even if the shop will ship a large piece of wood, it will probably cost you quite a lot of money.

the quality and shapes of driftwood is so variable, i wouldnt buy it based on a photo. i would rather see it in person to know exactly what i was getting. altho i see it on ebay all the time.

I have read that real driftwood can stain your water and make it look like tea.
There are some nice fake pieces made of resin on the Drs. Foster and Smith website.
I was thinking of getting a couple of these.
Any thoughts?

I have noticed that the real drift wood dose stains the water. I was told that it would stop after awhile but 5 years later and the water still turns a bit brown.

Can you just use driftwood you find at the lake? It might not be the same color as the stuff you buy but it’s FREE and that is always good.

No, you cannot.
Not every kind of wood is suitable for in tank use.
Some wood will rot away, some will discolour the water and some wood may even make your water toxic for fish.
I say it's not worth the risk and you better go to your LFS and get some drift- or bogwood that is safe for your fish and meant for use in your tank.

driftwood found in the shoreline that had been there for age is sure
safe to use. i even had tried a roots of a bamboo and it last until i don't like
it anymore...(3 years) and it didn't harm whatsoever the fishes at all.
