Total newbie to keeping Oscars! Please help? 2 years, 2 months ago #83205

Hi guys, I am totaly new to keeping Oscars but have wanted to for years after seeing a friends pair. I have read up on this site and lots of others but still need to learn lots more. I have one small Tiger Oscar he is about 80mm long and I have ordered a friend for him. They will be in a 190L tank for now with a filter that pumps 1200L per hour. I know this tank will need to be changed to a bigger one with two Oscars in it when they get a little bigger. I am feeding him/her TetreCichlid granules, Bloodworms and a frozen Cichlid food along with crickets from my garden.

Has anyone got any tips to help me keep my little mate happy and healthy?

Welcome to our little community.

I think you have already answered your own question when you say you need a bigger tank, this is by far the best way of keeping Oscar's healthy, providing them with a healthy environment to live in. if you can, I would advise you strongly to put on hold adding any more Oscars. Your tank is approximately 55 gallon, that is big enough for one Oscar only.

Seems like you have a good filtration. The key to keeping Oscars healthy are mainly keeping the water in good quality. Oscars really don't do well in poor water quality. Another important factor in keeping them healthy is their diet. A healthy varied diet is what we recommend, good quality pellets as their staple diet, with other little goodies as treats as we like to call them. Don't feed them on live fish. If you want to give them some live food then I would recommend things like worms, crickets, meal worms, all of these are much much healthier than buying fish that could potentially harbor diseases.

One very important thing to remember is that the Oscars are fairly high maintenance fish if you haven't got a large aquarium. That means regular water changes.

Anyway, I'm sure someone else will you be the benefits of their advice as well.

Thank you guys. I have had my little mate for a month or so and spend more time watching him than TV. He is a litte dude. I am feeding him Bloodworms for breakfast, teltra cichlid pellets after work and a cricket or two depending on size that the kids and I catch before they go to bed. Is that to much as the water goes a bit yellow mid week? I do a 20% water change on Saturdays should I do one on Wednesdays too?

The best tip i can give is to get a test kit for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate the bottle types not the strips-these will act as an early warning system if things start to go wrong, test weekly. Ammonia and nitrite should be zero and nitrate 40 or below. If you nitrate is above 40 the you will need to do more or bigger water changes. Only feed what your fish will eat in 2 or 3 mins 2 or 3 times a day if your fish is less than 3 or 4 inches, once a day if bigger.
