I have no real idea as for how much the coral would raise the pH of the water, but I'd put it like this:
If the coral alters the pH so significantly that you'd need to play around with pH down or up, I wouldn't do it.

You need to keep in mind that say a pH of 8 is not 1/14 higher than pH 7, but 10 times as high. And pH 9 is 100 times higher than 7. At least if I remember correctly. You can't avoid strong fluctuations if using such pH adjusting stuff which isn't good at all for the fish IMO, better to keep it stable.
If I were a guy, I\'d have probably needed only 30% of the amount of words to say this

ive done th coral thing b4 and i will assure u that it messes with yr ph(ph goes sky high).

boil it up for a while and stick it in a bucket of water and then do a test on the water in the bucket to see what effect it has on yr ph level.
DONT BUY ON IMPULSE DO SUM HOMEWORK FIRST

If the coral has been in a saltwater tank dont use it. A long time ago a friend of mine set up a goldfish tank and was given a piece of coral from her friend. Her goldfish kept dying after a few weeks and we worked out it was the coral. It must of been leaching salt into the tank
I can't get no sleep
