We were just in the local pet store picking up food for my wife's finches and I was looking around the place for sand, been thinking about trying sand since I saw how nice it looks in the video section here.

I didn't find any for fish, but I was wondering if it is safe to use the colored reptile sand that they sell? Has anyone tried it?

As far as I know, nothing is added to the sand that will cause you any problems. It always recommended to give it a good wash in a bucket before you put in your tank anyway. You'll find that a lot of aquatic centres sell so-called "aquatic sand" I found this to be a bit of a rip-off because you'll find exactly the same product in garden centres for a fraction of the price.

yup mate penn is right im go to landscaping section in yr garden stores and u will find the same stuff for cheap.

If you're buying sand for reptiles be sure theres nothing added,Ikeep reptiles too and alot of sand that is for reptiles is called calci sand,as there is alot of calcium added to it incase of ingestion which happens alot with reptiles.The sand is normally coloured though,And the die does run in water ive had water bowls in all colours when a snake is shedding as its in and out.You can get kilm dried sand i don't think anything is added to this but check and it won't be died.That's my experience with reptile sand,but if you do by reptile sand just check nothing is added that may harm the fishes.Much cheaper to do what vbaby and penn said,have fun.

Well, when I went to the pet store they said I shouldn't use it, for many of the reasons timskie stated (though timskie explained it much better then they did!).

I just wanted white sand anyways, so since I was heading to the LFS anyways I asked there and got about 25 pounds for $10 dollars, which seemed like a fair price to me.

I'm trying this out in a smaller tank before I go through the trouble of changing out Chopper's tank, but I definetly like the look!
